Not advice
Assay, this website and everything on it are provided for information. Nothing here is legal, financial, medical, academic or other professional advice, and no professional relationship is created by using Assay or reading this site. If a decision matters, take advice from a qualified person who knows your circumstances.
Results can be wrong
Assay compares text with the sources described on the evidence page. It can be wrong in both directions: a real work can come back "not verified" because a source does not hold it, and an invented claim can pass because a matching record exists. "Verified" means only that a matching record exists; it does not mean a statement is true, that a source says what a sentence claims, or that a document is fit to publish, file or submit. A source that is down, throttled or changed can give an incomplete answer, and Assay reports those as "check", not as a finding. Read what Assay cannot do.
You are responsible for what you publish
Assay is an aid to a person who decides. You remain responsible for checking anything before you publish, file, submit, sell or rely on it, including every item Assay marks as fine. Do not use Assay as the only check on material where an error could cause harm, loss or legal consequences.
No warranty
Assay is released under the MIT licence and is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, availability and non-infringement. The authors do not warrant that Assay, its sources or this website will be uninterrupted, error-free or secure.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the authors and Extrafemi Labs and Extrafemi Research are not liable for any loss or damage of any kind, direct or indirect, including loss of money, profit, data, reputation or opportunity, or for any claim by a third party, arising from the use of, or inability to use, Assay or this site, or from reliance on any result or content. Nothing here excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
Third-party services and data
Assay can query services run by others, including CrossRef, OpenAlex, Open Library, PubMed, Semantic Scholar, the DOI registries, the World Bank, the IMF, Eurostat and CourtListener. Those services have their own terms, limits and accuracy, and are outside our control. Names of services, organisations and products belong to their owners and are used only to say what Assay talks to; their use does not mean affiliation with, or endorsement by, anyone named. If you use Assay, you are responsible for following those services' terms.
The cases page
The cases page describes publicly reported court decisions, tribunal decisions, studies and press reports, each with its sources, to illustrate what can go wrong with AI-written text. Figures and statements are as reported in those sources, which we did not independently verify beyond what is stated, and the page is not a finding about the conduct of any person or organisation. Where a source is secondary we say so. If you believe something on that page is inaccurate or unfair, please tell us through the issue tracker below and we will review and correct it promptly.
Your text and your data
The checks that compare text with material you supply run on your own device or server and make no requests. The citation check sends the author names, title, year and link of each citation, and the retraction, value and link checks send DOIs, search terms or addresses, to the services they query, as the documentation states. The legal check sends the text you give it to CourtListener, and a model you supply to the support check will receive whatever you send it. Do not send confidential or personal text anywhere you would not otherwise send it. The offline demonstration on this site sends nothing: its security policy does not allow the page to make a request.
Changes and corrections
We may change this site, Assay and this disclaimer at any time. Please report errors, or anything here that seems wrong, to the project's issue tracker on GitHub.
About this page
This page is a good-faith plain-language statement of the limits of the project, written by its authors. It is not itself legal advice and may not suit your circumstances; if you rely on Assay in a regulated or high-stakes setting, have a lawyer review how you use it.
